Room 4 Garden Project
During term 3 Room 4 has been busy working on the school vege garden. They have been weeding, putting dirt in, planting and watering away and shared a presentation on this during assembly this week.

SAMS Learner

Room 3 were in charge this week of presenting something at assembly. After some thought they decided to create a SAMS Learner Movie detailing what it involves being a SAMS Learner. They got their inspiration from this link here. They hope after watching their movie you get a clear idea of what it means to be a SAMS Learner.

MACBETH

Double, double, toil and trouble,

Fire burn and caldron bubble.”

Witches, Act IV, Scene I

On Thursday the 22nd of September, St Andrews Middle School had the pleasure of seeing the Aranui Theatre Company perform Macbeth, a Shakespeare play. The actors were very talented, not getting thrown off by all our giggles and whispers. We were mesmerized by all the action and the tension created by the performance.

Because it was a modern version, it was much easier to understand and our school enjoyed it immensely. The amazing thing was that there were only five actors which made it hard but they pulled it off and the applause they received was colossal.

After the exciting act, we found out that the crew was Christchurch based and fresh out of high school, which made it even more mind-blowing that they memorised the long paragraphs of Shakespeare’s phenomenal play.

We wish them the best for the acts to come and hope they visit again because the experience was fantastic!

Stars, hide your fires!

Let not light see my black and deep desires.

Indonesian Dance Performance Experience!

Learning about a new culture is always fascinating. This is why SAMS was honoured to have three Indonesian dancers come and perform for us, and teach us about their culture.

The dances were a swirling mass of traditional colours. The dancers used many props during their performances, like fans, masks, drums, and clothing especially made for a special type of dance. Our school watched, entranced, as exotic and cultural music flowed out. The dancers were spectacular to watch, and you could tell that they had many years of experience.

Then the highlight of the performance: where students were chosen and shown how to do some of the simpler dance moves. But it didn’t turn out to be as simple as we thought, as we struggled to keep up with the dancers’ graceful movements. But most importantly, we had a lot of fun, and our laughter quickly filled up the room.

After the amazing performances, questions were answered, origins of dances were explained, final songs were danced to, and then, sadly, it was over.

We all had a great time, coming away full of knowledge and Indonesia and the cultural dances. It was much more fun than any of us had ever imagined, and we can’t wait to see much more shows as great and enlightening as this one!

School Promotion

Over the last week the St Andrews travelling road show has been in full swing.

Our amazing Kapa Haka group and school Rock Band have performed at three schools promoting our awesome little school. The students from Pukete, Vardon and Aberdeen Schools have all enjoyed seeing these two acts perform for them during special school assemblies.

Hopefully seeing these acts from our school will help these kids decide they want to spend the next chapter of their lives at St Andrews Middle School. A big thank you has to go out to all of the students involved and Whaea Casey, Matua Darryl and Mr Fitzgerald for all their hard work and enthusiasm.

WAI MATHS

Think maths, think quick!

Thursday night, 4:30pm, 12th of August. Hamilton Gardens Pavilion.

The room was filled with noise as schools from all over Waikato (more than 50 schools) competed
against each other, and the clock. WaiMaths is a mathematic competition where schools answer 20
questions during the time limit.

We were lucky enough to send two teams from SAMS to the night. The year7 team members were:
Te Marukore Elliott-Hohepa, Connar Crown, and Logan Raina. Special thanks to Logan for filling in at
last minute notice. The year 8 team was: Joyce Guo, Grace-Eva Kerapa-Tane and Horim Choi.

Our teams displayed excellent SAMS skills and tried their best. Unfortunately, they didn’t place, but
they all agreed that it was a fantastic experience.

Congratulations to Horim Choi for winning the WaiMaths poster competition, and to Emma
Campbell for placing 2nd in the poster competition.

X-Country

On Thursday 12th August, a buzz of excitement and anxiety was going around SAMS. Two words in
particular seemed to be spreading like a wild fire: CROSS COUNTRY.

Yes, it was that time of the year again.

1pm found us at Porritt Stadium, getting warmed up for our races. The Year 7 girls went first,
followed by the Year 7 boys. Then the same order went with the Yr 8’s. As every race started,
deafening cheers could be heard, just an example of SAMS spirit. We were in luck with the weather;
it almost seemed as if the sun was cheering for us too. There was a lot of panting and groaning
involved as we ran up hills, down hills and through mud patches, but everyone participated, gave it
their all, and we came out smiling. A big thank you to all the marshals that gave their time and gave
us lots of encouragement that definitely helped us along the way.

Once again, this year’s cross country was a great experience and a huge success. Watch out for next
year!
